Lightfast Rating

Yes, Arteza Expert Colored Pencils have a lightfast rating. Lightfastness is a property of pencil core such as dye or pigment that describes how resistant to fading it is when exposed to light. The lightfast rating is essential to artists, especially when they spend long hours creating art; they will want the work of art to keep its vibrancy for years to come. The lightfastness has a lot to do with the higher cost of the pencils.

Arteza Expert Colored Pencils uses a plus (+) system to define the lightfast level for each pencil. The ratings are as follows 1+/Excellent, 2++/Great, 3+++/Good, 4++++/Fair. A rating of 1+ being the lowest and 4 +++ being the highest. The following chart reviews how many Arteza pencils have which lightfast rating level. [Return to TOC]

Container Description

The pencils come in a protective, double-hinged tin case. Inside the container are plastic trays with finger pinch slots for easy removal. The trays have finger slots for easy removal. I noticed that the end of the tray where the pencil was sharped was tapered, making it easier for me to pick up the pencils. A color chart is located on the inside lid of the case. [Return to TOC]

First Inspection

As a habit, when I first open the box of pencils, I like first to check pencil duplications and missing pencils. Check to make sure the cores are centered. Next, I will check them for pencils for imperfections (e.g., shaft spits, broken cores, light printing).

The Arteza Expert Colored pencils were a set of 72 pencils. The pencils were nicely packaged and protected in a hinged tin container. The pencils are professional looking and have a nice range of bright and vibrant colors. The pencils have a sturdy wood encasing a pigment core. All of the set’s 72 pencils were accounted for with no duplications. The pencils are arranged in red, flimsy plastic trays that were wobbly when lifting from the container. The pencils come pre-sharpened with a blunt point. Every aspect of the pencil quality, from lead to printing, appeared sharp, without a flaw. There were no broken tips or dust. Overall, I was delighted with the presentation and quality of the pencils.[Return to TOC]

Arteza Expert Colored Pencils Review and Summary

In this section, I move beyond the description and facts of the colored pencils. I am going to provide my subjective/personal review based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages and sheets and answer the question; I am focused on answering the questions like “What do think about Arteza Expert Colored Pencils?”; “Are the Arteza Expert better than other colored pencils”; “What are the Arteza Expert pros and cons?” “What are some tips on making the best purchase decision?”.[Return to TOC]

How the Colored Pencils Performed

Arteza Expert Colored Pencils are a wax-based, medium-hardness core that feels smooth and creamy when applied. When coloring, the pressure was purposely applied at varying degrees of pressure. The pencils performed well with light to medium pressure, and when heavy pressure was applied, there wasArteza-expert-colored-pencils-performance-rating limited cracking/chipping. The pencils provided a consistent, smooth feel, vibrant and pleasing color, good saturation, and excellent coverage of large areas. The pencils are nice looking and have a nice feel in your hands.

The pencils are easy to layer and blend and sufficient for any need I have in adult coloring. The pencils experience a slight wax bloom after three/fourth layers, and the pencil can generate a light core dust/crumb, which is easy to brush away.

Leads are strong, and the cores seem well-centered. The pencils sharpen easily and can sharpen to a fine point with minimal core breakage. When coloring, the pencils hold their point similar to a harder core pencil when applying medium pressure.

Regarding paper, the pencils work well with different levels of coloring book paper, including the Amazon KDP shelf-publish paper and the medium texture paper that gives you enough tooth (peaks and valleys) to layer your coloring pencils.

Are the Arteza Expert Colored Pencils better than Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils? These colored pencils are a great alternative, especially at budget/average prices, as your primary or second set of colored pencils. Are they better? These pencils are in my top 3 pencil sets for this price point. See my review of Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils.

Overall, the coloring experience was delightful. [Return to TOC]

Tips for Purchasing

Usually, before purchasing, it is advisable to get a feel of the pencils by either purchasing a small set or individual pencils when you can buy open-stock or if you know someone who has the pencils can try theirs.Arteza Experts Colored Pencil-Front Tin Closeup

Arteza Expert Colored Pencils are considered a budget (i.e., under .50 cents per pencil) and come in set sizes of 48, 72, and 120 pencils. The best way to learn about the performance is to read reviews like this, view YouTube reviews, and read Amazon reviews. The cost of the colored pencils is right on the borderline of low-end/budget (Under .50 cents)and mid-range/average (.51 cents to $1.00 dollar).

I favor getting the largest set you can afford if you know what to get. You have a good color selection to cover most coloring book themes and projects. As time goes on, you may continue to add to your collection. That is what I have done. It’s not uncommon for me to use pencils from two sets in a project. [Return to TOC]
