Detailed Crayola Signature Colored Pencils Review and related article resources.
Adult coloring is among the most satisfying pastimes I have ever experienced. All it takes is your favorite coloring pencils, coloring book, comfortable chair, or favorite place for the day. Coloring happens at home when traveling, at the park, or in your neighborhood coffee shop. Whether you are just beginning or becoming an experienced colorist, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing and experiencing the joy of coloring.
This article is about my personal experience with Crayola Signature Colored Pencils, and I have written the article from a colorist’s perspective on adult coloring. The review is subjective, based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages, and sheets. My review seeks to provide as much information as possible to ask the right questions, evaluate the information, and make better decisions about the colored pencils you choose and use. I will update this article as new information becomes available.

Barrel Description
The Crayola Signature pencil shaft is round, black, and plain looking. The Crayola logo appears on one side of the barrel printed in silver, followed by the color name in English, French, and Spanish, which appear in the upper part of the pencil. The pencil shaft is capped with color-dipped ends representing the core pigment, and the colors on the endcap don’t match the pigment color very well. [Return to TOC]
Lightfast Rating
No rating. Lightfastness is a property of a colorant such as dye or pigment that describes how resistant to fading it is when exposed to light. Lightfast rating is essential to artists, especially when they spend long hours creating art; they will want the work of art to keep its vibrancy for years to come. The lightfastness has a lot to do with the higher cost of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Range of Colors
The Crayola Signature Colored Pencils are soft wax-core with a limited but nice range of colors for 50 pencils. The good part is that the colors range goes well with each other. This limited pallet is easily corrected if you supplement the set with other pencil sets (if you have them). The colors are nicely arranged in order of color.
Before using the colors on a project, I recommend swatching the colors for the set (and for every pencil you own) rather than relying on the color printed on the pencil barrel. This will help you make wiser and more appropriate color choices. [Return to TOC]
Container Description
The Crayola Signature Colored Pencils pencil set comes in a black tin. A European-like small-town artwork scene is on the face of the lid. When you open the lid, you see a plastic tray holding 25 pencils. There is one grove that functions as a pinch slot, making it rather tricky to pull the tray out without disturbing the order of the pencils. The order of the pencils in the trays seems rather haphazard and random. [Return to TOC]
First Inspection
As a habit, when I first open the box of pencils, I like first to check pencil duplications and missing pencils. Check to make sure the cores are centered. Next, I will check them for pencils for imperfections (e.g., shaft spits, broken cores, light printing). The Crayola Signature Colored Pencils are presented in a black tin with a European-like small-town artwork on top of the lid.
The tin is sturdy with budget plastic trays that can be difficult to lift. The printing was basic and hard to read on some pencils. The pencils came pre-sharpened and were in good condition with no breakage. Overall, I was pleased with the delivery and presentation of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Crayola Signature Colored Pencils Review and Summary
In this section, I move beyond the description and facts of the colored pencils. I am going to provide my subjective/personal review based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages and sheets and answer the question; I am focused on answering the questions like
- What do you think about Crayola Signature Colored Pencils?
- Are the Crayola Signature Colored Pencils better than other colored pencils?
- What are the Crayola Signature Colored Pencils’ pros and cons?
- What are some tips on making the best purchase decision?”.
How the Colored Pencils Performed
The Crayola Signature colored pencils are waxed-based, softcore pencil that is a noticeable upgrade from their children’s baseline of colored pencils.
Because of my experience with my children’s Crayola pencils, I was not expecting much from these colored pencils…until I began coloring. The pencil cores lay down smoothly and provide a vivid pigment. The pencils feel lighter than other pencils and felt just ok in my hand.
You can go from very light shading to vibrant pigment by simply adjusting your pressure. I was intentionally heavy-handed and applied more than five layers to one drawing. In both cases, I felt I needed to apply a little more pressure to achieve my smooth, desired results, and I did experience a slight waxy bloom. The blending and shading were just as good and met what I needed for coloring.
Regarding paper, I used the colored pencils on basic Amazon coloring book paper and the more expensive artist edition coloring books. The colors worked best on smoother papers of all grade levels, and I think the pencils are best used on the lower-priced coloring books.
My pencil sharpening experience was mixed. I had several pencils where the lead kept breaking in the handheld sharpener. I tried these pencils in a hand crank and electric pencil sharpener and got a good point with minimal breaks.
I think there are various ways to determine how you gain the most from the Crayola Signature colored pencils. You can use the Crayola Signature coloring pencil
- As your sole source of a coloring pencil.
- For practice, before you use more expensive pencils (e.g., Pablo’s, Polychromos)
- In combination with other pencil sets.
- For sharing with others in family projects.
- For non-permanent work.
Review Summary and Rating
I think the Crayola Signature Blend and Shade Colored Pencils are the best choices for the Crayola brand colored pencils. I would recommend the pencils for the adult coloring community for the lower cost or smooth paper coloring books. The layer, blending, and shading is acceptable for good coloring results. The color pallet is limited to only 25-set and 50-set options, which can be easily resolved when combined with other colored pencil sets (if you have them). I think the pencils would also be a nice gift for older children and beginner coloring. I want more colors and a better plastic tray with pinch slots that would make the tray easier to remove from the tin. Overall, the coloring experience was good. The important takeaways are as follows:

Tips for Purchasing
Crayola Signature Colored Pencils are considered low-end/budget (Under .50 cents) and come in set sizes of 24 and 50pencils. Usually, before purchasing, it is advisable to get a feel of the pencils by either purchasing a small set or individual pencils when you can buy open-stock or if you know someone who has the pencils can try theirs. Because Crayola Signature Colored Pencils are so inexpensive, I don’t mind just purchasing a set. I would encourage you to read or view other reviews.
If you decide to get a set, I suggest getting the most extensive set you can afford to avoid duplicates and give yourself a full pallet of colors to work with. In the long run, I feel like I save the most, and I especially look for special promotions during holiday seasons and put out price watches on my favorite eCommerce sites.
