Detailed Kalour Colored Pencils Review and related article resources.
Adult coloring is among the most satisfying pastimes I have ever experienced. All it takes is your favorite coloring pencils, coloring book, comfortable chair, or favorite place for the day. Coloring happens at home when traveling, at the park, or in your neighborhood coffee shop. Whether you are just beginning or becoming an experienced colorist, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing and experiencing the joy of coloring.
This article is about my personal experience with Kalour Colored Pencils, and I have written the article from a colorist’s perspective on adult coloring. The review is subjective, based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages, and sheets. My review seeks to provide as much information as possible to ask the right questions, evaluate the information, and make better decisions about the colored pencils you choose and use. I will update this article as new information becomes available.

The Kalour pencil shaft is round, and the color on the barrel represents the core pigment for easy identification. On the shaft is written “Kalour,” followed by color name and then pigment identification number. The end of the barrel is open so you can see the core. [Return to TOC]
Lightfast Rating
No rating. Lightfastness is a property of a colorant such as dye or pigment that describes how resistant to fading it is when exposed to light. Lightfast rating is essential to artists, especially when they spend long hours creating art; they will want the work of art to keep its vibrancy for years to come. The lightfastness has a lot to do with the higher cost of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Range of Colors
The Kalour 180 Colored Pencils (6 plastic trays of 30 pencils) are wax-based colored pencils that come in various colors. I think it is quite easy to say; you will find that the range of pigment colors is rich, bright and inviting. The colors are presented in the order of their coloring families. While there are a lot of pencils to get excited about, you must remember that these are low-budget pencils.
Before using the colors on a project, I highly recommend swatching the colors for the set (and for every pencil you own) rather than relying on the color printed on the pencil barrel.
Tips for Purchasing. Because Kalour Colored Pencils are so inexpensive, I don’t mind just purchasing a 180-pencil set. [Return to TOC]
Container Description
The 180 colored pencil sets come in a tin, and the pencils are in 6 brittle plastic trays of 30 pencils each. And you quickly notice the sturdiness and compactness of the tin. The plastic trays have pinch grooves on each side of the tray for easy removal. [Return to TOC]
First Inspection
As a habit, when I first open the box of pencils, I like first to check pencil duplications and missing pencils. Check to make sure the cores are centered. Next, I will check them for pencils for imperfections (e.g., shaft spits, broken cores, light printing).
These pencils are not made well. I was pleased with the color and organization when I opened the tin. When removed the six trays, I found pencils that had broken leads. I noticed of the pencil cores were off-center. When I tried to sharpen the pencils with the broken leads, I experienced continual lead breakage, lead chipping, and shafts splitting. It’s hard to see half a pencil gone in one sharpening. ARRG. Let’s say I was not very impressed with the construction of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Kalour Colored Pencils Review and Summary
In this section, I move beyond the description and facts of the colored pencils. I am going to provide my subjective/personal review based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages and sheets and answer the question; I am focused on answering the questions like
- What do you think about Kalour Colored Pencils?
- Are the Kalour Colored Pencils better than other colored pencils?
- What are the Kalour Colored Pencils’ pros and cons?
- What are some tips on making the best purchase decision?”.
How the Colored Pencils Performed
The Kaklour colored pencils are wax-based, softcore, with a round barrel, made in China. I considered these pencils to be low-end cost (cheaper) pencils, and I reviewed them based on the category and my experiences with other pencils.
I was coloring; the pencils had a consistent, good color saturation and coverage of large areas. I felt the coloring experience was good. I like the way the pencils easily layer. As I tested the layering, I purposely was heavy-handed and had a thick application on one coloring page, and I applied a lighter touch and gently applied the layers I wanted. Kalour performed well in both cases, producing good colors. I felt the blending and shading met what I needed for coloring.
Because the cores are soft, you will lose your point rather quickly, preventing you from doing detailed work. The pencils tend to produce wax dust, and I use a soft brush to remove them from the coloring page.
The pencil’s cores have nice pigment and are pleasant to use. But they are frustrating when it comes to breaking, splitting, and sharpening. The pencils are low-budget (cheap) pencils, and I still would like better construction. It’s hard to see half a pencil gone in one sharpening because the lead keeps breaking.
Regarding paper, the pencil performance seemed to be just as good on the basic Amazon coloring book paper as on the more expensive artist edition coloring books.
I think there are various ways to determine how you gain the most from the Kalour colored pencil. You can use the Kalour coloring pencil
- As your sole source of a coloring pencil.
- For practice, before you use more expensive pencils (e.g., Pablo’s, Polychromos)
- For sharing with others in family projects.
Review Summary and Rating
I think the Kalour Colored Pencils are an ok low-end (Cheap), wax-based, softcore. I like the way the pencils perform. I felt blending, shading, and layering were good, and I had a good coloring experience. But I can’t get past the poor quality of the pencil. You have a good range of colors that will allow you to color any themed coloring book. I think I would be more inclined to use these pencils on the cheaper, Amazon paper coloring books.
If you are going to do adult coloring, spend more, do yourself a favor, and buy pencils that will give you hours of joy and satisfaction. But if this is all you can afford, you will have a good budget pencil that will give you practice in sharpening-colored pencils.
Overall, the coloring experience was good. The important takeaways are as follows:

Tips for Purchasing
Kalour Colored Pencils are considered low-end/budget (Under .50 cents) and come in set sizes of 120, 180, and 240 pencils. Usually, before purchasing, it is advisable to get a feel of the pencils by either purchasing a small set or individual pencils when you can buy open-stock or if you know someone who has the pencils can try theirs. Because Kalour Colored Pencils are so inexpensive, I don’t mind just purchasing a set. I would encourage you to read or view other reviews.
If you decide to get a set, I suggest getting the most extensive set you can afford to avoid duplicates and give yourself a full pallet of colors to work with. In the long run, I feel like I save the most, and I especially look for special promotions during holiday seasons and put out price watches on my favorite eCommerce sites.
