Detailed Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils Review and related article resources.
Adult coloring is among the most satisfying pastimes I have ever experienced. All it takes is your favorite coloring pencils, coloring book, comfortable chair, or favorite place for the day. Coloring happens at home when traveling, at the park, or in your neighborhood coffee shop. Whether you are just beginning or becoming an experienced colorist, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing and experiencing the joy of coloring.
This article is about my personal experience with Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils, and I have written the article from a colorist’s perspective on adult coloring. The review is subjective, based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages, and sheets. My review seeks to provide as much information as possible to ask the right questions, evaluate the information, and make better decisions about the colored pencils you choose and use. I will update this article as new information becomes available.

Barrel Description
The Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils colored pencil shaft is round and has the color of the pencil’s pigment, which is a very close match. The pencils looked and felt classy. On one side of the pencil shaft, you will see printed in gold foil the words “Established in 1887”, followed by the Mitsubishi logo and name, next the words “Colored Pencil,” and finally, two gold bands with the “Uni” appearing at the top of the pencil.
The other side of the shaft includes the pigment name, followed by the pigment identification number, then “Japan,” next to the two gold bans. The pencil is capped.
When it comes to round vs. hexagonal colored pencil barrel designs, I like the round barrels because they feel comfortable in my hands. When I use colored pencils, I will select the two or three colors I am working with and keep them out of the plastic tray or pencil case for easy access. The round pencil barrels tend to roll when placed on uneven surfaces when bumped on a surface and can fall on the floor and break the lead. Arrg. The hexagonal pencil, however, will stay in place without rolling. My simple solution is to place the pencils in a temporary secure place (e.g., mug, small plastic tray, inside of the open case, inside tin lid of a pencil case). Because of the Mitsubishi colored pencil case design, the potential problem of pencil storage and safe placement during coloring is neatly resolved. [Return to TOC]
Lightfast Rating
No rating. Lightfastness is a property of a colorant such as dye or pigment that describes how resistant to fading it is when exposed to light. Lightfast rating is essential to artists, especially when they spend long hours creating art; they will want the work of art to keep its vibrancy for years to come. The lightfastness has a lot to do with the higher cost of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Range of Colors
The Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils are soft to the medium-like core, providing an expected but well-thought-out selection of pigment colors. You have the color pallet to color any theme coloring book or scene. The colors are arranged in the order I would like my pencils if I were to arrange them in a case.
Before using the colors on a project, I recommend swatching the colors for the set (and for every pencil you own) rather than relying on the color printed on the pencil barrel. This will help you make wiser and more appropriate color choices. [Return to TOC]
Container Description
The Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils come in a black, very unique, functional hard plastic case for the 72-set and 100-set with a lid that remains hinged to the case. The container provides outstanding protection while providing secure and quality protection. When you open the 100-set, you can stand the case resting on the spine and face it towards you. The plastic case can function as your permanent pencil case.
The pencils are organized in rows of four pencils. Each row has an individual slot for each pencil. When you want to retrieve/withdraw a colored pencil, you pull/pivot the row forward, and the pencils will angle towards you for each retrieval. If you desire, you can pull all pencil rows forward and have all the colors accessible at once.
On the inside lid and each row of colored pencils, you have a clearly marked directory of color names in English and Japanese and pigment identification numbers.
The 72-set case is similar to the 100-set in that the opened case stands on its side facing you. Two rows of pencils tuck nicely inside the upper and lower lids. You access the pencils by lifting the trays, so they are at an angle for easy access. The colors and numbers are clearly marked on each tray.
The containers are an excellent way to store and work with colored pencils. On the other hand, the cases are bulky and don’t allow for mobility, such as in travel, sitting in your favorite chair, and so forth. [Return to TOC]
First Inspection
As a habit, when I first open the box of pencils, I like first to check pencil duplications and missing pencils. Check to make sure the cores are centered. Next, I will check them for pencils for imperfections (e.g., shaft spits, broken cores, light printing). The Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils are presented in a colorful, well-designed, sturdy case, with no broken tips or dust. The case is wonderfully designed and functional. I liked the organizational and visual appeal. The printing was clear on the case and pencils. Overall, I was delighted with the classy presentation and quality of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils Review and Summary
In this section, I move beyond the description and facts of the colored pencils. I am going to provide my subjective/personal review based on my experience, research, and the performance of colored pencils in activities like coloring books, pages and sheets and answer the question; I am focused on answering the questions like
- What do you think about Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils?
- Are the Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils better than other colored pencils?
- What are the Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils’ pros and cons?
- What are some tips on making the best purchase decision?”.
How the Colored Pencils Performed
The Mitsubishi Uni colored pencils are intelligent-looking soft to the medium-like core and wax-based from Japan. The softcore pencils were soft and smooth, with beautiful color, vibrance and saturation. I liked the feel of the pencil in my hand.
My coloring experience was average but enjoyable. This means the pencil did not feel expensive, but I could apply color and find satisfaction in my coloring results for both detail and broad coverage areas.
You can go from very light shading to vibrant pigment by simply adjusting your pressure. I was intentionally heavy-handed and applied more than five layers to one drawing. In both cases, I felt I needed to apply a little more pressure to achieve my smooth, desired results, and I did experience a slight waxy bloom.
The blending and shading were just as good and met what I needed for coloring. I colored and did not experience dust or crumbling of the core as I applied pressure.
I did sharpen the pencils to a point with no breakage and splitting. During coloring, I was not able to keep the point for long. I made sure that I focused on the small, detailed areas of my coloring first. When coloring, The pencils did wear down faster than desired, causing the need to sharpen more often.
Regarding paper, the pencil performance and color vibrance was satisfying on the basic Amazon coloring book paper. Still, I would not use them on the more expensive artist edition coloring books.
I think there are various ways to determine how you gain the most from the Mitsubishi Uni colored pencils and colored pencils. You can use the coloring pencil
- As your sole source of a coloring pencil.
- For practice, before you use more expensive pencils (e.g., Pablo’s, Polychromos)
- In combination with other pencil sets.
- For sharing with others in family projects.
- For non-permanent work.
Review Summary and Rating
For the price point, Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils are intelligent-looking soft to the medium-like core and wax-based from Japan. The pencils perform well, but you can get the same quality from other pencils that cost half to one-third. However, I do love the design/case. I recommend them for the adult coloring community but as a second or third set (mainly due to the cost). My coloring experience was average but enjoyable. This means the pencil did not feel expensive, but I could apply color and find satisfaction in my coloring results for both detail and broad coverage areas.
You have the color pallet to color any theme coloring book or scene. I felt the layering, blending, and shading was acceptable for my coloring needs. When coloring, the pencils did wear down faster than desired, causing the need to sharpen more often. I did sharpen the pencils to a point with no breakage and splitting.

Tips for Purchasing
Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils are considered Mid-range/average (.51 cents to $1.00 dollar) and come in set 90 pencils. Usually, before purchasing, it is advisable to get a feel of the pencils by either purchasing a small set or individual pencils when you can buy open-stock or if you know someone who has the pencils can try theirs.
There is a smaller Mitsubishi Uni Colored Pencils (36-set) that you could purchase and test, but it is on the expensive end. For the price you pay for a 36-set, you could get a nice budget set and colors. I would encourage you to read or view other reviews.
If you decide to get a set, I suggest getting the most extensive set you can afford to avoid duplicates and give yourself a full pallet of colors to work with. In the long run, I feel like I save the most, and I especially look for special promotions during holiday seasons and put out price watches on my favorite eCommerce sites.
