Barrel Description
The Nyoni pencil shaft is round, and the color of the Nyoni barrel represents the core pigment. On one shaft in gold lettering is written “Painting,” “Colored Pencil,” 
followed by letter/number combination (e.g., N8520) next to the two gold strips. Above the strips is the Nyoni logo.
On the other side of the shaft is the wording “Painting Oiliness,” next to the two gold strips. Above the strips is repeated the letter/number combination (e.g., N8520) from the other side of the pencil.
I would have liked to have seen the name of the color for each pencil. Colors on the barrel are not a good match of the core pigment colors.[Return to TOC]
Lightfast Rating
No rating. Lightfastness is a property of a colorant such as dye or pigment that describes how resistant to fading it is when exposed to light. Lightfast rating is essential to artists, especially when they spend long hours creating art; they will want the work of art to keep its vibrancy for years to come. The lightfastness has a lot to do with the higher cost of the pencils. [Return to TOC]
Range of Colors
The Nyoni Colored Pencils are oil-based colored pencils that come in various colors. I think you will find that the range of colors is rich, bright, and inviting.
As I have opened and used pencil sets, it is not unusual in sets of coloring pencils to find them heavy in several colors like reds and blues and light in others like earth tones. The Nyoni color palette is balanced and gives me all the choices I would want to color in any themed adult coloring book easily (e.g., animals, mandala, jungle, forest, mythical, city, shapes, ocean, people). In the 120-pencil set, I liked the abundance of pastel color choices, which is unusual.
The 120 set has three trays. Tray 1 includes yellows, reds, and greens. Tray 2 includes more reds, blues, purples, and darker greens. Tray 3 includes browns, earth tones, and grays. I did like the range of pastels that were included in the set.

Container Description
The colored pencil sets come in a tin, and the pencils are in 3 brittle plastic trays of 40 pencils each. The plastic trays have pinch grooves on each side of the tray for easy removal. [Return to TOC]
First Inspection
As a habit, when I first open the box of pencils, I like first to check pencil duplications and missing pencils. Check to make sure the cores are centered. Next, I will check them for pencils for imperfections (e.g., shaft spits, broken cores, light printing). The pencils are low-budget pencils; you get what you pay for and can’t ask for much more than what you get with these pencils.
I would have liked to have seen the name of the color for each pencil. Colors on the barrel are not a good match of the core pigment colors.
One of the first things I noticed is that Markart and Nyoni Colored Pencils are brands of Markart. I had the same experience with both pencils, and my review of both pencils is almost the same. The only difference I did notice is in the barrel description. Am I certain? No. But it is a close match.
Compared to other budget pencils I have inspected, Nyoni Colored Pencils was a nice presentation. Overall, these pencils came in good condition, well packed. [Return to TOC]

How the Colored Pencils Performed
The Nyoni colored pencils are oil-based, softcore, with a round barrel. When I was coloring, the pencils had a consistent, smooth feel, good color saturation, and
excellent coverage of large areas. The pencils are nice looking and have a nice feel in my hands. I enjoyed the coloring experience.
The pencil core is softer than I would like and does become blunt rather quickly. This made coloring tiny details in coloring books difficult. If I continue using these pencils in these coloring book applications, I would want to use them in conjunction with a medium-hardness core pencil that would hold its point longer.
I like the way the pencils easily layer. As I tested the layering, I purposely was heavy-handed and had a thick application on one coloring page, and I applied a lighter touch and gently applied the layers I wanted. The Nyoni performed well in both cases, producing beautiful colors, and I did not experience any blooming.
I felt the blending and shading were just as good and met what I needed for coloring. I did experience a slight crumbling as I pressed harder, but I just brushed it away.
The pencil’s cores seemed durable, which helps them last longer, making them resistant to breakage, and needing constant sharpening. The pencils were easy to sharpen, and I could sharpen 120 pencils to a fine point with no breakage. Regarding paper, the pencil performance seemed to be just as good on the basic Amazon coloring book paper as on the more expensive artist edition coloring books.
I think there are various ways to determine how you gain the most from the Nyoni colored pencil. You can use the Nyoni coloring pencil
- As your sole source of a coloring pencil.
- For practice, before you use more expensive pencils (e.g., Pablo’s, Ploychromos)
- Alongside another medium-hardness set, you would want to use this set for fine detail.
- For sharing with others in family projects.
- For non-permanent work.
Review Summary and Rating
Frankly, I was surprised at how well the pencils performed, and I was wrong when I was expecting a cheap, Chinese budget-throwaway pencil. I think the Nyoni
Colored Pencils are a good low-end, oil-based, softcore, budget pencil for adult coloring and beginners. I think you will find that the range of colors is rich, bright and inviting, which allows you to color any themed coloring book (e.g., portraits, landscapes, seascapes, varied designs). I felt blending, shading, and layering were good and what I needed for my adult coloring experience. The pencils are easy to sharpen with no breakage. I recently reviewed several low-budget pencils from China (e.g., Kalour, Markart, Nyoni, Cezanne, and Soucolor). They all seem to perform about the same. Pick any one of them, and you should be satisfied. Overall, the coloring experience was good. The important takeaways are as follows:

Tips for Purchasing
Nyoni Oil Based Colored Pencils are considered low-end/budget (Under .50 cents) and come in set sizes of 36, 48, 72 and 120 pencils. Usually, before purchasing, it is advisable to get a feel of the pencils by either purchasing a small set or individual pencils when you can buy open-stock or if you know someone who has the pencils can try theirs. Because Nyoni Oil Based Colored Pencils are so inexpensive, I don’t mind just purchasing a 120-pencil set. I would encourage you to read or view other reviews.
